Truckee tops Moapa Valley in state semifinal

RENO — Moapa Valley's hopes of a 15th state volleyball title came to an end this morning at Damonte Ranch.

Truckee (Calif.) swept the Pirates in a Class 3A state semifinal, 26-24, 25-19, 25-19. Truckee, the No. 2 seed from the North, will face Yerington in Saturday's state championship match.

Cydney Solomon had 22 assists for the Pirates, who made the trip north after winning the Class 3A Southern League tournament last week.

Briane Olige had eight kills and two blocks for Moapa Valley (21-7). Shelby Thompson added seven kills, six digs and two aces. Megan Stringham had 14 digs, and Britney Hughes added seven digs and six kills.

Moapa Valley, which first captured the state volleyball title in 1975, won 13 consecutive state titles from 1991-2003, the last eight of which came in Class 3A. Truckee has never won the state volleyball crown.

"I am proud of these girls," said Moapa Valley coach Matt Messer. "They had a great year. It's tough to lose a state game, but hopefully we learned a life lesson."

Michelle Hoehn had 12 kills for Truckee (28-7). Lindsay Nason dished out 21 assists.

Yerington 3, Dayton 0 — The two-time defending state champions stayed on track for a three-peat with a 25-15, 25-21, 25-22 win over Dayton in the second semifinal.

Yerington entered the state semifinals as the North's No. 1 seed. Dayton was the No. 3 seed from the North.
