Girls Track & Field
Zachariah Branch won three events to lead the Bishop Gorman boys track team to the Class 5A regional track championship. Centennial won its 11th girls title in a row.
The Desert Oasis boys posted 195 points and the Palo Verde girls had 163 to win the team titles at the Class 4A Desert Region track and field meet Wednesday at Desert Oasis High.
Track and field meets this season have been limited to four teams. That will change at this week’s regional meets, where as many as 10 teams will compete.
These 16 Nevada high school boys and girls track and field athletes in the valley figure to excel again this spring.
When competition begins Friday, it will end a 401-day drought since the Clark County School District suspended all sporting events at the start of the COVID pandemic.
Arbor View’s Israel Mann and Rickey Jones, Legacy’s Lee Wilson and BJ Phillips, and Bishop Gorman’s Mark Person and James Petrie will play at Southwest Minnesota State.

Centennial ran away with its ninth straight Class 4A team championship. The Bulldogs scored 126 points. Runners-up Carson and Sierra Vista each had 54.
Bonds, who also ran on the winning 400 relay team and finished third in the 100, helped Centennial build a big lead heading into Saturday’s events.
Edmond ran the 100 meters in 11.84 seconds on Saturday at Desert Oasis to secure the Moutain Region championship — and an automatic bid to the Class 4A state meet next week. Teammate Aniya Smith finished second in 12.11, and Centennial’s Quincy Bonds ran 12.16 for third.
Essence Johnson won three individual events and ran on the winning 400 meter relay team Tuesday to help host Cimarron-Memorial’s girls track team win a three-team meet.
Emily Wickens won two individual events and ran on the winning 800-meter relay team Monday to help Coronado’s girls track team capture a four-team meet at Foothill.
Jada Bell and Marin Houlihan each won two individual events Thursday to help Green Valley’s girls track team defeat both Liberty and host Basic in a three-team meet.
