Centennial girls win twice, take big lead

Centennial’s girls had a commanding lead after the second day of the Sunset Region track and field meet at Del Sol High School, winning two events Friday.

The Bulldogs have 83 points with 10 events to be contested next Friday. Palo Verde is second with 38 points.

Centennial’s Ashley Lively and Karli Johonnot went one-two in the pole vault. Lively won the event with a vault of 10 feet, 4 inches.

Teammate Tatijana Davis won the triple jump with an effort of 36-0. 

The other individual winners were Legacy’s Avione Allgood, who won the shot put with an All-Zone/Region record throw of 42-3, and Shadow Ridge’s Michelle Schenck, who won the 3,200-meter run in 11:45.78. 

Western’s girls ended the day with just three points but sent a strong message that the best was yet to come.

The Warriors placed multiple qualifiers in the 100, 200, 400 and 800 and led the field in the three sprint relays.

In the boys meet, Palo Verde’s Chaz Thomas won the discus (152-11) to help the Panthers maintain their lead with 68 points, 19 ahead of second-place Centennial.

Cheyenne’s Ricky Rideout won the high jump (5-11), and Legacy’s Karell Oliver took the long jump (21-7).

In the Sunrise meet, Green Valley’s Arion Molinaro won the discus (169-2), and teammate Brigham Tauteoli was third to help the Gators maintain a 71-44 lead over second-place Canyon Springs.

Other winners were Chaparral’s Joeal Hotchkins in the long jump (23-5) and Eldorado’s Charles White in the high jump (6-3).

In the Sunrise girls meet, Coronado’s Michaelanne Laurent won the 3,200 (11:20.28), and Emily Kashka won the pole vault (10-9) to help the Cougars to a 43-41 lead over second-place Foothill.

Canyon Springs’ Destanae Howerton-Davis won the shot put (41-10), and Liberty’s Carlotta Island took the triple jump (37-5).
