I-A SWIMMING: Eagles set records, roll to titles

Boulder City’s swimming team had no problem defending its Division I-A Southern Region titles, winning 20 of the 24 events Saturday at UNLV’s Buchanan Natatorium.

The Eagles outdistanced Faith Lutheran easily, 602-407 in the girls meet and 547-322 in boys.

The Eagles opened the meet on a strong note with Montana Lloyd, Natalie Grothe, Rachael Grothe and Alex Hubel setting a meet record in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1 minute, 47.96, besting last year’s mark of 1:52.53.

Lloyd set a pair of individual records as well, including shattering the 100 backstroke mark with a time of 57.39, nearly seven seconds ahead of the previous mark of 1:04.15. She also set a record in the 200 individual medley, with a time of 2:10.05.

Rachael Grothe dominated the 100 butterfly, winning in 56.09 to break her record (59.48) from last season.

Hubel set a new standard in the 100 freestyle with a time of 50.4, topping her own mark of 50.72. She topped teammate and second-place finisher Rebecca Lelles (55.43) by more than five seconds.

Boulder City’s Sam Sauerbrei set the record in the boy’s 200 individual medley with a 1:57.55, breaking the record (1:58.72) he set last year.

The Eagles’ girls’ 400 relay team also set a meet record of 3:37.29, breaking the mark of 3:40.11 that they set last year.

Faith Lutheran’s Bowen Becker won the boys 50 freestyle (21.45) and 100 freestyle (47.35). He was the only non-Boulder City athlete to win a swimming event. The Eagles didn’t field a diver in the two diving events.
