SOFTBALL: Faith Lutheran tops Desert Oasis for title

Sophie Foster went the distance and struck out eight Saturday to lead Faith Lutheran’s softball team to a 10-3 win over Desert Oasis in the championship game of the Colorado River Invitational in Needles, California.

The Crusaders scored three runs in the top of the first and never trailed. They tacked on six in the third to pull away.

Ellie Fried had three hits to lead Faith Lutheran’s offense. Haley Jack added two hits, and Clara Heislen drove in two runs for the Crusaders.

Meagan Anders was 2-for-4 with a double and a solo homer for the Diamondbacks.

Faith Lutheran 8, Silverado 0 — At Needles, California, Foster spun a two-hit shutout to lead the Crusaders to the five-inning win over the Skyhawks in the semifinals of the Colorado River Invitational.

Foster struck out six and also had two hits.

Jack added two hits and two RBIs for Faith Lutheran.

Faith Lutheran 7, Needles 0 — At Needles, California, Jack fired a three-hit shutout to lead the Crusaders over the Mustangs in the Colorado River Invitational.

Jack struck out three and also had three hits.

Heislen added two hits and an RBI, and Ryleigh Gilchrist drove in three runs for Faith Lutheran.

Jaycee Fragoso had two hits for Needles.

Desert Oasis 11, Durango 3 — At Needles, California, Izriah Hodson went 2-for-3 with three RBIs to lead the Diamondbacks to the four-inning win over the Trailblazers in the semifinals of the Colorado River Invitational.

Anders was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs, and Hailey Jaramillo went 2-for-2 for Desert Oasis.

Alexis Geraldo went 2-for-3 with two RBIs to lead Durango, and teammate Trinity Valentine had a double and an RBI.

Desert Oasis 14, Mohave Accelerated (Ariz.) 0 — At Needles, California, Maggie Shepard and Jaramillo each drove in three runs to help the Diamondbacks to the three-inning win at the Colorado River Invitational.

Shepard 2as 2-for-2, and Jaramillo went 2-for-3 with a double. Holly Severance was 2-for-2 with two RBIs for Desert Oasis, and teammate Meaghan McInerney went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.

Legacy 3, Williams (Ariz.) 1 — At Needles, California, Kiani Tung scored on an error with one out in the bottom of the fifth to give the Longhorns the win in a Colorado River Invitational consolation game.

Williams led 2-1 going to the bottom of the fifth, but Legacy started the bottom of the inning with five consecutive singles. Tung’s hit plated Clarissa Lona with the tying run. After a runner was thrown out at the plate, Tung came home after Williams misplayed Braelin Brockaway’s grounder to short to end the five-inning game.

Lona was 3-for-3 with two runs, and Tung went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Angel Ortiz and Haley Pedersen each added two hits. Pedersen also threw two scoreless innings of relief with three strikeouts to get the win.

Silverado 2, Boulder City 0 — At Needles, California, the Skyhawks scored twice in the top of the sixth with the help of two errors to edge the Eagles in the Colorado River Invitational.

Centennial 5, Taylorsville (Utah) 1 — At Bullhead City, Arizona, Amanda Sink tossed a three-hitter with 10 strikeouts to lead the Bulldogs to the six-inning win over the Warriors in the Tournament of Champions.

In the third inning, Centennial’s Maddie Kallfelz made a leaping catch over the wall to rob a home run.

Brianna Benoit went 2-for-2 with two RBIs for the Bulldogs.

Centennial 8, North Torrance (Calif.) 1 — At Bullhead City, Arizona, Benoit was 2-for-3 with a homer, a double and four RBIs in the Bulldogs’ win over the Saxons in the Tournament of Champions.

Kiana Tate was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs, and Jaden Tate and Makenzie Ball each doubled for Centennial.

Palo Verde 7, Herriman Utah (2) — At Bullhead City, Arizona, Richmond Garcia hit a home run as the Panthers beat the Mustangs in the Tournament of Champions.

Jessica Nimmo, Camden Zahn and Makall Whetten each went 2-for-2 for Palo Verde. Whetten doubled for the Panthers.

Palo Verde 7, Greenway (Ariz.) 0 — At Bullhead City, Arizona, Makena Martin had two RBIs and two runs, and Ally Snelling homered in the Panthers’ four-inning win over the Demons in the Tournament of Champions.

Winning pitcher Taylor Askland had five strikeouts in three innings for Palo Verde, and Martin struck out two in a scoreless inning of relief.

Foothill 14, Cleveland (N.M.) 4 — At Bullhead City, Arizona, Leah Becker was 3-for-3 with a double, a homer, three RBIs and three runs as the Falcons topped the Storm in the Tournament of Champions.

Caitlyn Stevenson went 4-for-4 with a double, three runs and two RBIs, and Kylie Becker went 2-for-e with a double and four RBIs for Foothill. Haleigh Olive, Jocelyn Shupp and Kayla King each added two hits for the Falcons.

South Hills (Calif.) 10, Foothill 2 — At Bullhead City, Arizona, the Huskies scored six runs in the fourth to pull away from the Falcons in the Tournament of Champions.

Stevenson was 2-for-3 with a double and a run for Foothill, and Zoe Vandeveer drove in two runs for the Falcons.

Villa Park (Calif.) 4, Coronado 3 — At Bullhead City, Arizona, the Spartans plated four runs in the fourth and held off the Cougars in a six-inning game at the Tournament of Champions.

Coronado scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth, but the rally fell short.

Tatum Spangler went 2-for-2 with a double and two RBIs for Coronado. She also went the distance in the circle, allowing two earned runs on four hits.

Perry (Ariz.) 4, Coronado 3 — At Bullhead City, Arizona, Chloe Krason doubled twice to help the Pumas top the Cougars in the Tournament of Champions.

Spangler was 2-for-4 with a triple and a run for Coronado.

Canyon (Calif.) 11, Shadow Ridge 2 — At Bullhead City, Arizona, the Comanches scored 10 runs in the second inning and rolled to the four-inning win in the Tournament of Champions.

Pacifica (Calif.) 4, Shadow Ridge 3 — At Bullhead City, Arizona, the Mariners jumped out to a 4-0 lead and held off the Mustangs in the Tournament of Champions.

Alisha Schultz went 2-for-3 with an RBI for Shadow Ridge, which scored three runs in the top of the fifth.

Shea Clements went 2-for-3 for the Mustangs.

Bishop Gorman 12, Woods Cross (Utah) 7 — At Gorman, Mia Weckel was 3-for-3 to lead the Gaels past the Wildcats in the Kick Off the Season Tournament.

Farmington (N.M.) 12, Bishop Gorman 4 — At Gorman, Reyna Martin went 3-for-3 with a double, but the Gaels fell to the Scorpions in the Kick Off the Season Tournament.

Monique Passalacqua had a double for Gorman.

Oaks Christian (Calif.) 7, Rancho 3 — At Doc Romeo Park, Gianna Carosone hit a double, but the Rams fell to the Lions in the Kick Off the Season Tournament.

Taylor Johnson pitched four innings for Oaks Christian, and also doubled and tripled. Teammate Katie Simonsgaard went 3-for-3.

Salpointe Catholic (Ariz.) 8, Arbor View 6 — At Doc Romeo Park, the Lancers scored three runs in the first inning and never trailed as they topped the Aggies in the Kick Off the Season Tournament.

Green Valley 16, Logan (Utah) 0 — At St. George, Utah, Sierra Miranda was 3-for-4 with a double and four RBIs as the Gators earned a five-inning win in the March Warm-Up Tournament.

Alexa Blazek was 3-for-4 with a double and three RBIs, and Tyre Hilton was 3-for-4 with an RBI for Green Valley.

Andrea Mason fired a two-hitter to get the win.

Desert Hills (Utah) 14, Green Valley 2 — At St. George, Utah, Sophie Wilcox went 2-for-2 with a home run, a double and five RBIs to lead the Thunder to a five-inning win over the Gators in the March Warm-Up Tournament.

Brooke Haney was 1-for-2 with a double, and Blazek was 1-for-2 with an RBI for Green Valley.

Tonopah 23, Mountain View 5 — At Laughlin, Nia Van Kempen had three RBIs, but the Saints fell to the Muckers in the Cougar Classic.

Laughlin 23, Mountain View 6 — At Laughlin, the Cougars scored 12 runs in the first inning to rout the Saints in the Cougar Classic.

Miah Fields-Gibbens had a double and run scored for the Saints.
