SOFTBALL: Desert Shields edge Grizzlies on squeeze bunt

Jonnette Paddy scored the eventual winning run on a bases-loaded squeeze bunt with no outs in the top of the eighth inning Thursday to lift Cheyenne’s softball team to a 4-3 win at Spring Valley.

Cheyenne trailed 3-0 before scoring three runs in the sixth.

Paddy was hit by a pitch to lead off the eighth, and Italy Mora and Kaitlyn Dutton followed with singles to load the bases. Jaylyn Ridgeway bunted, and Paddy beat the throw to the plate.

Dutton was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, and Destiny Gain was 1-for-3 with a double for the Desert Shields.

Ellie Endsley was 3-for-4 with a triple and an RBI for the Grizzlies.

Sierra Vista 14, Mojave 4 — At Sierra Vista, winning pitcher Kalei Watkins went 4-for-4 with a home run, three doubles and four RBIs to lead the Mountain Lions by the Rattlers in six innings.

Adrianna Somerville and Kira Felise each went 2-for-4 for Sierra Vista.

Moapa Valley 5, Virgin Valley 0 — At Mesquite, Daesha Stastny tossed a four-hitter as the Pirates blanked the Bulldogs.

Durango 11, Green Valley 1 — At Durango, Kaitlyn O’Hearn was 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs, and Mallory Lawson had a home run and three RBIs as the Trailblazers topped the Gators in five innins.

Alia Armstrong was 2-for-4 with a run for Durango, which got a four-hitter from Trinity Valentine.

Faith Lutheran 13, Western 3 — At Faith Lutheran, Mosie Foley was 2-for-3 with a home run and a double to lead the Crusaders by the Warriors in five innings.

Erin Gilchrist was 2-for-3 with two RBIs, and Vanessa Valdez went 2-for-3 for Faith Lutheran.

Jennessa Dunton hit a solo home run for Western.

Coronado 4, West Torrance (Calif.) 1 — At Torrance, Calif., Sarah Pinkston hit a solo home run and allowed only two hits in seven innings to lead the Cougars past the Warriors at the Torrance National Tournament.

Pinkston, who was perfect through six innings, finished with eight strikeouts.

Tatum Spangler went 3-for-3 with two triples and two runs to spark Coronado, and teammate Brooke Younie was 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Stockdale (Calif.) 6, Arbor View 3 — At Torrance, Calif., the Mustangs scored five runs in the top of the fifth to rally for the victory in the Torrance National Tournament.

McKenna Valencia homered for Stockdale.

Brittany Henricksen had a double for Arbor View.

Westlake (Calif.) 5, Arbor View 0 — At Torrance, Calif., Meehra Nelson fired a no-hitter with 19 strikeouts as the Warriors beat the Aggies in the National Tournament.

Frontier (Calif.) 9, Coronado 2 — At Torrance, Calif., Basia Query went 3-for-3 with a double in the Cougars’ six-inning loss to the Titans at the Torrance National Tournament.

Agoura (Calif.) 7, Centennial 1 — At Torrance, Calif., the Chargers scored four runs in the first inning to top the Bulldogs in six innings in the Torrance National Tournament.

Port of Los Angeles (Calif.) 2, Centennial 0 — At Torrance, Calif., the Polar Bears scored two runs in the first inning and hung on to top the Bulldogs in six innings in the Torrance National Tournament.

Cimarron-Memorial 14, Eldorado 3 — At Eldorado, Kianna Baquiran had two hits and two RBIs as the Spartans downed the Sundevils.

Carmen Hasbrouck and Ciara Karpinski each added two hits for Cimarron.

Pahrump Valley 22, Clark 3 — At Clark, Jill Smith and Aryana Cuellar each hit a home run to help the Trojans top the Chargers in five innings.

Tulare Western (Calif.) 4, Rancho 2 — At Fresno, Calif., the Mustangs scored three runs in the top of the eighth inning and downed the Rams in the Washington Union Invitational.

Mountain View 23, Lake Mead 3 — At Mountain View, winning pitcher Savannah Alley was 2-for-2 with two doubles, four runs and four RBIs as the Saints topped the Eagles in three innings in the Spring Slam.

Kayla Freund was 1-for-1 with a double and a run for Lake Mead.

Bishop’s School (Calif.) 23, Mountain View 2 — At Mountain View, Sophia Acker went 3-for-5 with five RBIs as the Knights routed the Saints in four innings in the Spring Slam.

Alley was 1-for-2 with a double, a run and an RBI for Mountain View.
