Breanne Nygaard, Pahrump lead after first day of 3A state golf

The first state girls golf title in more than a decade is within grasp for Pahrump Valley.

The Trojans shot 375 as a team on the first day of the Class 3A state tournament at Schaffer’s Mill in Truckee, California, on Monday, and Breanne Nygaard shot 8-over-par 80 to take the individual lead.

Pahrump last won a state title in 2007.

“We played good,” Pahrump Valley coach Bob Hopkins said. “It’s kind of a tough course, has lots of trees and stuff.”

Nygaard is one shot better than Lowry’s Tatyana Carlson, and three strokes ahead of Western’s Carolyn Lemon. Nygaard finished second to Lemon at the Southern Region tournament last week.

The Trojans won the team region title, and lead Boulder City by 14 strokes heading into Tuesday. Elko is third at 399, one stroke ahead of Lowry and four strokes ahead of Spring Creek.

Ryann Reese and Sydney Krumm each shot 87 and are tied for fifth to lead Boulder City

“They came back on strong in the regional,” Hopkins said of Boulder City. “We hope we can go out and get it done tomorrow.”

The final round of the tournament is scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday at Schaffer’s Mill.
