GOLF: Lake Mead edges The Meadows for Class 2A state title

Lake Mead’s Nick Herrero birdied the 18th hole on Tuesday to give the Eagles a one-stroke victory over The Meadows in the Class 2A state golf tournament at Eagle Valley’s West Golf Course in Carson City.

Herrero needed to top Kevin Inthachack of The Meadows on the final hole, and when Inthachack finished at par on 18, the Eagles captured their first state golf title.

“We had a five-stroke lead at the end of Day 1, and The Meadows ate that up,” Lake Mead coach Billy Combs said. “It really came down to Nick Herrero, our senior. He was the last guy in, he birdied 18 and Kevin Inthachack parred it, so that was the one-stroke difference.”

Lake Mead shot 462 on Tuesday to finish with a two-day total of 895. The Meadows shot 458 for the final round to finish at 896.

Combs said as the first groups began to come in, he could tell that the Mustangs were making up ground.

“Our guys don’t play well in the wind, and it was super windy and cold,” Combs said.

“It was a stressful afternoon as the scores were coming in, for sure.”

Yerington’s Griffin Cooper shot 76 for the final round to claim the individual title at 148. Veronica Joels of The Meadows was second at 154 after shooting 76 on Tuesday. Inthachack, who was in a three-way tie for the lead after shooting par for the first round, shot 84 on Tuesday and slipped to a tie for fifth at 156.

Herrero tied for sixth at 161, and Lake Mead’s Jake Butcher shot 88 Tuesday to finish ninth at 175.

Boulder City places second at 3A state

At Spring Creek Golf Course, Boulder City’s Kyler Atkinson shot a 4-over-par 75 on Day 2 to finish with a 154 overall to tie for second individually and help the Eagles to a second-place finish at the Class 3A state tournament.

Spring Creek’s Daniel Mahlke shot a 75 on both days of the tournament to finish with 150 and win the state title. Boulder City shot 423 as a team Tuesday to finish with a two-day total of 869. Spring Creek shot a 417 to finish with 815 and win the team championship.

Pahrump Valley’s Austen Ancell shot 154 over the two days to tie with Atkinson for second. Western’s Jared Smith shot 158 to finish tops among all unaffiliated players, and fifth overall.

Hogan Fowles of Virgin Valley shot 163 to place eighth, Boulder City’s Jackson Wright shot 164 to finish ninth, and Mojave’s Marcus Mullins’ 167 was good for 10th.

Pahrump Valley finished fifth by shooting 918 as a team, and Mojave was sixth with 1,179.
