Looking ahead at the week in high school sports

Here is a look at some of the week’s top high school sports events.

CROSS COUNTRY

Saturday — Falcon Invitational at Foothill, 7 a.m.

The meet has 30 high school teams entered, and begins with a 2.1-mile middle school race at 7 a.m. The first 3.1-mile high school race is the freshman/sophomore boys race at 7:30 a.m.

FOOTBALL

Friday — Chaparral at Moapa Valley, 7 p.m.

The Class 3A Sunrise League opener features the league favorites. Chaparral and big-play threat TyRay Collins will look to avenge last season’s 53-40 loss to the Pirates.

Friday — Mojave at Desert Pines, 7 p.m.

The winner of this one has the inside track for the Class 3A Sunset League title. Tawee Walker has the surprising Rattlers off to a 4-1 start, while the defending 3A state champs are 2-2 after losing their first two games.

Friday — Las Vegas at Canyon Springs, 7 p.m.

This figured to be the Northeast League title game, but it’s lost a significant amount of luster after Las Vegas’ 0-5 start.

Friday — Foothill at Liberty, 7 p.m.

The Falcons are off to a 5-0 start, but run into Kenyon Obald and the second-ranked Patriots.

GIRLS GOLF

Thursday — Class 3A Sunrise League match at Las Vegas National, 1:30 p.m.

Boulder City’s Lani Potter has been in a class of her own in Class 3A this season. The senior, who won the individual state title last year, will lead the Eagles in this six-team match.

BOYS SOCCER

Friday — Western at Bishop Gorman, 5:30 p.m.

One of Class 3A’s best gets a crack at one of Class 4A’s best when the No. 4 Warriors travel to play the No. 3 Gaels.

Thursday — Centennial at Cimarron-Memorial, 3 p.m.

The Northwest League is going to have a photo finish for its four playoff spots, and the Bulldogs will look for a big road win at the No. 7 Spartans.

GIRLS SOCCER

Tuesday — Faith Lutheran at Legacy, 3 p.m.

Despite the Longhorns’ not having a a Northwest League win yet, don’t count them out against the No. 10 Crusaders. Legacy has two prolific scorers in Gabriella Lancaster and Isabella Skrinjaric.

Tuesday — Shadow Ridge at Palo Verde, 3:30 p.m.

Still undefeated in Northwest League play, the No. 3 Panthers put that on the line against the No. 7 Mustangs.

BOYS TENNIS

Thursday — Region team finals at Darling Tennis Center, 8 a.m.

The 3A Southern region championship is at 8 a.m. The 4A Sunset and Sunrise boys championships are at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., respectively.

GIRLS TENNIS

Thursday — Region team finals at Darling Tennis Center, 11 a.m.

The 3A Southern region championship is at 11 a.m. The 4A Sunset and Sunrise girls championships are at 2 p.m. and 5 p.m., respectively.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Monday — Foothill at Coronado, 6 p.m.

The winner here has an inside track on the Sunrise League’s top seed. Both are undefeated in league play and have state aspirations.

Tuesday — Palo Verde at Durango, 6 p.m.

With Bishop Gorman and Shadow Ridge seemingly locked into the league’s top two seeds, the rest of the Sunset League playoff picture is unclear. Whichever team wins here could be positioned for that third seed.

Thursday — Shadow Ridge at Bishop Gorman, 6 p.m.

The Gaels knocked off Shadow Ridge in five sets in last year’s Sunset Region final en route to winning their first state title. These two teams are the overwhelming favorites to win state, and this matchup should be a good measuring stick for both teams.
