Strong second-half defense lifts Cougars over Valley

Coronado held Valley to 82 yards in the second half to secure a 27-26 road win on Thursday.
Valley (0-3) running back Garic Wharton had touchdown runs of 77, 74, and 48 yards to lead all rushers with 230 yards on 11 carries as the Vikings took a 20-7 lead at the half.
Coronado’s (2-0) defense came alive in the third quarter when linebacker Chaydon Larsen intercepted a pass from Valley’s Wallace Dean and returned it to the Viking 2-yard line sparking new life in the Cougar offense.
Cougar linebacker Matthew Chavarria came up with a sack with 48 seconds left to help secure the win.
