PREP NOTES: Gaels seniors stand out in all-star football games

Four Bishop Gorman senior football players excelled in recent postseason all-star games.

Defensive end Justin Chaisson had two sacks, two forced fumbles and a blocked extra point to help the White team to a 26-17 win over the Black on Sunday in the Under Armour All-America Game in Orlando, Fla.

Cornerback Charles Childers had six tackles (three solo) for the West in a 29-3 loss to the East in the Offense-Defense All-American Bowl on Friday in Conway, S.C. Safety John Therrell and offensive tackle Sam Womack also played in the game.

Chaisson has orally committed to Oklahoma, and Childers and Therrell are headed to UNLV.

CENTENNIAL COACH HONORED — Centennial football coach George Baker has been named a winner of the Liberty Mutual Insurance Responsible Coaching Award.

The award, which honors coaches who “emphasize sportsmanship and character-building in their approach to mentoring children,” is awarded to 44 coaches among nearly 1,100 nominated by parents and peers, according to a news release.

BOWLING FORFEITS — Basic’s girls bowling team forfeited 29 wins from its first four matches of the season because it used an ineligible bowler.

The Wolves’ record went from 52-2 to 23-31 after the team forfeited nine wins to Green Valley and Tech, seven to Coronado and four to Silverado. The bowler competed in 11 of Basic’s 12 games in the four matches.

Teams receive two wins for each game won and three wins for having the higher total pin count in each match.

Shadow Ridge’s boys also forfeited their match against Cimarron-Memorial on Dec. 15 due to the use of an ineligible bowler.
