Pirates blank visiting Skyhawks

Moapa Valley's Conner Mortensen compiled 49 yards and three touchdowns on 16 carries as the Pirates (7-2) blanked visiting Silverado (2-6) 33-7 on Friday.

Mortensen scored on runs of 4, 9 and 5 yards, and Dakota Gordon added a 20-yard rushing TD.

Dakota Watters passed for 82 yards, and Shane Terril caught four passes for 42 yards for Class 3A Moapa Valley, which improved to 5-1 against 4A teams.

Silverado trailed only 7-0 at halftime, but opened the second half with a surprise onside kick that Moapa Valley returned to Silverado’s 9-yard line. Mortensen scored on the next play.

Izaiah Thurmon rushed for 82 yards on 21 carries for Silverado, and Deandre Gause had 79 yards on 13 attempts.
