Patriots thump Cougars

Third-ranked Liberty (6-1, 5-0 Southeast) scored 28 points in the second and third quarters on the way to a 62-25 home victory over Coronado (2-5, 1-4) on Friday.

Kai Nacua’s 1-yard touchdown run with 12 seconds left until halftime gave Liberty a 21-3 lead.

Nacua threw for another TD in the third, hitting Dakota Mayer on a 31-yard pass. Niko Kapeli added a 35-yard rushing TD, and Kimo Seau scored on a 15-yard fumble return, making the score 41-3.

Liberty had 501 yards of total offense, 439 of it on the ground. Kapeli led the team with 239 yards rushing.

The Patriots’ defense held Coronado to 40 yards rushing and scored two touchdowns off turnovers.

Nate Webb threw three touchdown passes to lead the Cougars.
