NOTES: Grizzlies football makes Teal head coach

Marcus Teal joined the Spring Valley football coaching staff when the school opened in 2004, and he’s felt at home since.

It’s one of the reasons he jumped at the chance to become the Grizzlies’ head coach. Teal was promoted in January from offensive coordinator, a job he held the past three seasons.

“I consider it to be home,” Teal said. “The job itself is a dream come true. To get to stay here, it’s been very exciting.”

Teal, a former Bonanza assistant, said the Grizzlies will continue to emphasize the running game but will incorporate more spread schemes into the offense.

Teal replaced Kelly Murphy, who was not retained despite posting a 14-7 record in two seasons. Murphy said he has been hired as Centennial’s defensive coordinator.

Teal said this will be his final year as Spring Valley’s softball coach.

MORE CHANGES — Cheyenne hired David Cochran as its football coach to replace Perryn Hale, who was removed when his teaching status came into question in October.

Cochran will be Cheyenne’s fourth head coach since 2008, including one interim coach.

Centennial hired former Eldorado coach Leon Evans to replace George Baker, who resigned as Bulldogs coach in November after going 13-17 in three years.

Evans was 5-15 in two years at Eldorado. The Sundevils filled his spot by promoting defensive coordinator Vernon Brown.

Recent coaching hires confirmed in other sports include Agassi Prep boys and girls track (Kevin Moran); Canyon Springs baseball (Tony Rogers) and softball (Nicole Branham); Chaparral swimming (Betsey Odom); Cheyenne baseball (Mike Hunter); Clark baseball (Doug Shadid), boys track (Rick Teller) and girls track (Elizabeth Case); Durango boys volleyball (Jennifer Johnson); Faith Lutheran softball (John Chilman) and girls soccer (Jarrett Dooley); Sierra Vista softball (Robyn Telles); and White Pine baseball (Pax Haslem).

DURANGO HALL — Durango inducted its inaugural class into its Athletic Hall of Fame on Friday.

Honorees included girls basketball player Danielle Boyack, football and basketball player Jamaal Brimmer, volleyball coach Robert Kelly, basketball coach Al La Rocque, baseball player Ryan Ludwick, softball and tennis coach Sandy Morgan and track and cross country coach Michael O’Dea.
