Moore, Vazquez connect to lead Spring Valley by Bonanza

On four different occasions Friday night, Spring Valley tried to send Antony Vazquez on a double move against Bonanza's tight secondary coverage.

The fifth time worked perfectly.

Quarterback K.C. Moore hit Vazquez for a 73-yard score with 3 minutes, 10 seconds remaining, and the visiting Grizzlies won the Banner Game for the second straight season with a 36-28 victory over the Bengals.

"We tried to hit that play several times in the game," said Spring Valley coach Marcus Teal. "We knew we had a chance to make a big play if we got the chance. Antony is our big play man, and he delivered."

Vazquez finished with six catches for 106 yards.

Bonanza, which had a fourth-quarter drive stall at the Spring Valley 8-yard line, did have one final attempt. But quarterback Wyatt Allison threw four straight incompletions, and the Grizzlies hung on for the victory. Allison threw for 182 yards but missed on nine of his last 10 passes.

"We all had to get on the same page at the half," said Teal, whose team trailed 22-14 at halftime. "I told the players to believe in the system and what the coaches are saying. Once they trusted what we were doing, they played much better.

Spring Valley got plenty of offense from senior Raheem Edmonds, who had three touchdowns and 93 yards on 14 carries.

The Grizzlies finished with 368 total yards, as Moore completed 14-of-19 passes for 197 yards.

"It's a win," said Teal. "We looked sloppy and inconsistent at times, but we made the plays when we needed them. We certainly have a lot to work on, but it feels good to get the victory."

Spring Valley often hurt itself, committing 17 penalties for 112 yards.

Bonanza had 172 yards of offense in the opening half, but just 79 after halftime.

Allison threw two touchdown passes to R.J. McCarter. McCarter caught six passes for 103 yards. DeShawn Williams rushed for 48 yards on 20 carries for Bonanza, which suffered its 15th straight loss.
