Mitchell’s third-quarter scores lift Diamondbacks over Bonanza

Desert Oasis' Elijah Mitchell scored three times in the third quarter to break a 21-21 halftime tie and lead the Diamondbacks (2-1, 1-1 Southwest) host Bonanza (2-2, 2-1 Southwest) 42-34 on Thursday..

Mitchell’s first score came on a 46-yard pass from Brennen Stott on the second play of the half after the team recovered an onside kick.
Stott connected with Mitchell for a 20-yard score later in the quarter, and Mitchell ran back an interception 55 yards on the last play of the quarter for his third score.

Ronald Hunt had 187 yards and two scores on 19 carries to lead Desert Oasis’ ground attack.

Quarterback Sterling Sprau threw two touchdowns and ran for another to lead the Bonanza offense.

The Diamondbacks held Bonanza running back Dasean Martin, who entered the game as the area’s leading rusher, to 57 yards rushing and a 7-yard touchdown.

Martin did show off his big-play ability with a 54-yard interception return on the third play of the game.
