Mathews’ TD passes key Mustangs in win over Lions

Needles' Andrew Mathews threw for touchdowns on his first two passes, sparking the Mustangs (5-3, 5-1 2A Southern) to a 34-12 victory over Calvary Chapel (1-7, 1-5) at The Meadows on Friday.
Needles took a 21-0 first-quarter lead, with Mathews throwing TD passes to Austin Baldwin (67 yards) and Daniel Guzman (16).
Needles’ Daric Courtwright carried 12 times for 142 yards and a touchdown, and returned an interception 61 yards for a score.
Steven Shigley scored on a 26-yard fumble return to pull Calvary Chapel to within 27-12 with 11:35 to play, but Needles answered with a six-play, 66-yard drive capped by Courtwright’s 10-yard run.
Baldwin had two interceptions and a fumble recovery to lead Needles' defense.
Calvary Chapel’s Cody Taylor rushed for 91 yards on 10 attempts, and Cody Moreno added 78 yards and a score on 25 carries.
