Late field goal gives Rams win over Dragons

Alexis Ayon-Lozano booted a 30-yard field goal to take the lead with 1:09 remaining in the game, and Roger Ward intercepted a late pass to seal Rancho's 16-14 road victory over Del Sol on Friday.

Del Sol (1-8) battled back from an early 13-0 deficit to take a 14-13 lead on a 5-yard touchdown run by Taariq Flowers with 8:46 to play.

The Dragons had the ball in Rams territory with less five minutes to play, but the Rancho defense was able to force a fumble which defensive end Luc Scott recovered on the 50 with 3:42 left in the fourth quarter.

The longest play from scrimmage came on the first play of the ensuing drive when Rancho quarterback Dion Southern scrambled up the middle, breaking tackles for a 42-yard gain to set up Lozano's game-winner four plays later.

A late desperation heave was intercepted by Ward to end Del Sol's hopes of a comeback.

Southern finished 7 for 13 passing for 67 yards and rushed for 102 yards on 20 carries to lead Rancho (3-6). Angel Walker and Robert Howard each had first quarter rushing touchdowns, and the Rancho defense held Del Sol to 108 yards of offense.
