Highlights from Week 5 of high school football

Here's a look at what happened during Week 5 of the high school football season.

WHAT WE LEARNED

1. The best team in the Sunrise Region might be vulnerable. Liberty has won five consecutive Sunrise titles, and the second-ranked Patriots are still clearly the team to beat. But they were sloppy Friday (19 penalties, two turnovers) in a 42-24 win over Coronado on Friday.

Even more important, it appears they lost leading rusher Chad Tebay for the season. Tebay went down with an apparent broken bone in his lower right leg on his 8-yard TD run on the first play of the second quarter. He leads the Patriots in rushing with 313 yards, and receiver Ethan Dedeaux (196 yards) is the only other Liberty player with more than 100 rushing yards.

Dedeaux is the team's top offensive threat, and also an outstanding defensive back. So it's unclear if Liberty would want to risk his health by making him the primary back, especially after he went down with a right ankle injury in Week 4 against Centennial and left the field on crutches.

2. Faith Lutheran is clearly the team to beat in the Division I-A Sunset League. The Crusaders don't put up gaudy numbers, and they don't seem to do anything fancy. They just win.

In Friday's game at Mojave (which was 2-0 in the league), Faith Lutheran had only 173 yards of offense, but managed to roll to a 30-2 win to sit alone atop the league standings.

3. They may as well hand Desert Pines the I-A Sunrise League trophy now. And it's a shame the Jaguars met Moapa Valley (the league's No. 2 team) in Week 3 for their first league game.

Since knocking off the Pirates 34-20 in Overton, Desert Pines has destroyed Chaparral and Boulder City by a combined score of 124-13.

And with only Virgin Valley, Del Sol and Sunrise Mountain left on the league slate, it's hard to imagine a way the Jaguars don't finish the season 6-0 in league.

Those three teams have combined for a 7-8 record thus far, and will find it tough to coral the speedy Jaguars, who only needed to give star running back Isaiah Morris five carries on Friday.

All he did was run for 129 yards and three TDs.

UPSET OF THE WEEK

Arbor View 21, Basic 14 — This wasn't a major shock, but with few surprises this week, No. 6 earning a home win over No. 3 will suffice.

There are those who left the Aggies for dead after they were dismantled by Desert Pines (gasp, a I-A school) 50-14 in the season opener.

But Arbor View has bounced back, and took care of business against a Basic team that was rolling, having won its previous two games by a combined 110-0.

QUOTABLE

"If it wasn't for those guys, we would have been in an even bigger hole. Our defense really helped our offense kind of get their groove."

— Bishop Gorman coach Kenny Sanchez on his defense after the Gaels limited Servite (Calif.) to 137 yards of offense, including just 23 rushing, in a 38-7 home win.

"Deago's a sophomore, and he showed a lot of heart getting in there. He was kind of running with one wing there for a half, if not more. He did a really good job."

— Arbor View coach Dan Barnson on reserve running back Deago Stubbs, who rushed for 173 yards and a touchdown after subbing for starter Curtis Jones, who was injured late in the first quarter in the team's 21-14 win over No. 3 Basic.

"Any time we play Coronado, it's going to be an emotional game. At times we looked great tonight, but at other times we made too many mistakes."

— Liberty coach Rich Muraco after his team overcame 19 penalties and two turnovers to defeat Coronado, 42-24.

"I just ran a little corner route and found myself wide open, and I was by myself for the touchdown. My mind was just going crazy trying to win this game."

— Green Valley sophomore receiver Christian Mayberry, who had two TD receptions, including the go-ahead, 14-yard score with 2:42 left in a 42-35 win over Palo Verde.

"The offensive line was really clicking for us tonight. They deserve a ton of credit. They really pushed down, getting to the linebackers, and they opened up some holes for us."

— Centennial running back Kayvon Miller, who rushed for 160 yards and two touchdowns in a 58-7 win over Canyon Springs.

"He got off to a good start early in the season, but he's had a couple of lapses. It is good to see him bounce back. He is continuing to work hard and we are pressing on him about continuing to do it consistently. He kind of put it together, and hopefully, we have him on the right track."

— Cheyenne coach David Cochran on running back David Walker, who rushed for 262 yards and two touchdowns in a 50-6 win over Sierra Vista.
