Here are the top games to watch for Week 10 of the high school football schedule (Oct. 19).
Coronado at Basic, 7 p.m.
Last season, the Wolves snagged the final Southeast League playoff spot, in no small part because they beat Coronado. Basic finished one game up on Coronado in the standings and that was that. It’s not hard to imagine a scenario where the winner of this game slides into the postseason.
The Cougars are building momentum after hiring away former Arbor View assistant Terry Riddle to be their new head coach. They plan on instituting a double-wing offense that has brought the Aggies to new heights, and with playmakers like defensive back Samaj Bolin, this might be the year Coronado returns to the playoffs for the first time since 2015.
Moapa Valley vs. Virgin Valley, 7 p.m.
If these teams played in Las Vegas, people would know a lot more about this rivalry. But if that were the case, it wouldn’t be the authentic feel this one has. The winner of the Victory Hammer has won the Sunrise League for a decade, and Virgin Valley is on a two-game winning streak after the Pirates won the previous 11.
The Bulldogs graduated one of the top performers in the state in Jayden Perkins last season, and Moapa Valley has been on a relative slump the past two years. But when these two meet, it’s always a good time, and might decide the Sunrise League once again.
Pahranagat Valley at Spring Mountain, 3 p.m.
If it’s small-schools rivalries you like, this is the week for you. These two have met for the state championship two years in a row, with Pahranagat Valley winning last year, and the Golden Eagles snapping the Panthers’ 104-game winning streak in 2016.
The Panthers were back to their old ways last year, rolling through their schedule and claiming their 11th title in 13 years. Quarterback Preston Higbee threw 40 touchdowns last year and rushed for 15 and is just a junior. Pahranagat Valley will be loaded as always, but the Golden Eagles always seem to up their game in this one.
