Gators rally with 25-point fourth quarter to edge Rams

Green Valley senior James Durbin kicked a 22-yard field goal with 12.2 seconds left and the Gators rallied with a 25-point fourth quarter to edge host Rancho 38-35 on Saturday.

Paul McKay led Green Valley’s comeback with 15 passes and 196 yards in the second half. The Gators trailed 35-13 with 10:27 left in the game, but recovered two onside kicks to help spark the rally.

McKay connected with Andrew McGovern on an 8-yard scoring strike to begin the rally. McKay then hit Austin Gibson for an 8-yard touchdown before Aaron Love tied the game on a 4-yard run with less than three minutes to play.

Rakeem Griffin scored the Gators’ first points in the second quarter with a 10-yard run, finishing with 124 yards on 14 carries.

Shamel David led the Rams with 165 yards on 20 carries, and Cody Hafen added 87 yards on five carries. Hafen scored three touchdowns for the Rams, including runs of 19- and 38-yards and an 18-yard TD reception from Will Gosse-Gardet.

Gardet completed 15 passes for 142 yards for Rancho. D’Andre Mason added 8- and 18-yard touchdown grabs for Rancho.
