Elijah Hicks, Las Vegas High roll past Rancho in annual Bone Game

Las Vegas High’s football team hasn’t lost the Bone Game on the field since 1995, winning 21 straight over Rancho in convincing fashion.

The 61st edition of the state’s oldest tradition stayed true to recent form Friday night.

The Wildcats scored four touchdowns in the first quarter en route to a 47-0 victory at Rancho.

Rancho attempted a fake punt four plays into the game, but Ethan Overson couldn’t handle the bad snap and Las Vegas took over at the Rams’ 20-yard line. Jordan Murrel threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Miles Davisone play later as the Wildcats grabbed a 7-0 lead.

On its next series, Las Vegas turned the ball over to Elijah Hicks, who responded with the first of his three first-quarter touchdowns, to give the Wildcats a 14-0 lead.

Rancho (0-8, 0-3 Northeast League) turned the ball over twice in the final two-and-a-half minutes of the quarter — both on kickoff returns.

Hicks answered with touchdown runs of 9 and 33 yards in the time span, and the Wildcats enjoyed a 27-0 cushion.

Hicks finished with 216 yards and four touchdowns on just 19 carries, including 115 in the first 12 minutes.

“It was a lot of fun out there tonight,” said Hicks, who also threw a 34-yard touchdown pass to Chris Bunn. “This game was very important to us, the students, faculty and alumni of Las Vegas High. We wanted to keep the Bone where it belongs.”

Davis added a 25-yard run for a score for Las Vegas (2-6, 2-1), which rushed for 359 yards.

“We have ran the football very well the last two weeks,” said Hicks, who posted his second straight 200-yard plus game on the ground. “We are learning from our mistakes from earlier in the year, and the running game is looking better.”

Jonathan Gunter rushed for 114 yards on 19 carries for Rancho, which finished with 122 total yards.

Las Vegas now leads the series, 35-25-1.
