Cheyenne rallies late, gains road win over Arbor View

Home had been very kind to Arbor View as the Aggies won their first two games there by a combined score of 93-13.

It appeared the No. 10 Aggies were on their way to remaining unbeaten at home, leading Cheyenne by six points heading into the fourth quarter.

However, everything that could go wrong for Arbor View did, and the Desert Shields took advantage by scoring 18 fourth-quarter points in earning a 25-13 victory Friday night.

Arbor View (2-3, 1-3 Northwest) held Cheyenne to 92 total yards in the third quarter, but the Desert Shields put together a 17-play scoring drive and got two interceptions from Dujuan Miller in a final period filled with big plays.

“I told the kids to keep playing and eventually we would wear them down,” Cheyenne coach Perryn Hale said. “It’s always a beautiful thing to get a road victory in league play. Tonight, we just kept fighting and do the things we do best.”

For Cheyenne, that means running the football as the Desert Shields had 247 yards, 204 of those coming from Jordan Butler.

“Ever since the Cimarron game, we have been relaxed on offense and concentrating on running the ball,” Hale said. “Tonight, we got the big drive and in addition our defense was tremendous.”

Cheyenne (3-2, 3-1 Northwest) marched 80 yards and took more than seven minutes off the clock to grab the go-ahead score: a 2-yard run by quarterback Kody Stahl.

Miller then intercepted Aggies backup quarterback Kyler Neilson on back-to-back possessions, and returned one for a 36-yard score to clinch the victory.

Butler had scoring runs of 61 and 42 yards for the Desert Shields, who outgained the Aggies, 375-243.

Thomas Flanagan scored both Arbor View touchdowns, on a 49-yard reception and a 1-yard run.
