Canyon Springs blasts Eldorado to win Northeast League title

Jayvon Pugh scored three times for the Canyon Springs football team Friday, including an 84-yard touchdown reception on the first play of scrimmage, to lead the Pioneers to a 49-0 road victory against Eldorado.

With the victory, the Pioneers (4-4, 3-0 Northeast League) clinched the Northeast League title, and are assured of hosting Basic in the first round of the Sunrise League playoffs on Nov. 3.

Pugh hauled in a deep pass from Kajon Edwards, broke a tackle and outran defenders to open the scoring 17 seconds into the game. DiaMante Burton, switching between tailback and quarterback for much of the game, extended the lead with a 70-yard run on a broken pass play. Burton evaded a sack, scrambled for a short gain to the left, reversed field cutting through the defense and down the right sideline for the touchdown.

Pugh scored his second TD on a 38-yard run, and Shakureon Dukes plunged into the end zone for a 1-yard run to give Canyon Springs a 28-0 halftime lead.

Torian Hammond scooped up a blocked punt on the 5-yard line and ran it in for a score early in the third quarter. Pugh scored again on a 51-yard touchdown run in the fourth and Gianni Blackwell added a late touchdown to cap the dominant Pioneer victory.

Pugh finished with 104 yards rushing on just three carries and 111 yards receiving on only two catches. Burton had 148 yards rushing on eight carries. Canyon Springs held Eldorado (1-7, 1-3) to just 89 total yards of offense in the shutout.
