Bishop Gorman QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson nominated for player of the year

Updated November 20, 2017 - 6:08 pm

As Bishop Gorman’s Dorian Thompson-Robinson reaffirmed his commitment to UCLA on Monday following the firing a day earlier of coach Jim Mora, the senior quarterback was announced as a nominee for the U.S. Army Player of the Year Award.

The U.S. Army All-American Bowl Selection Committee made the announcement. The committee on Monday announced 16 nominees, and said six finalists will be named Nov. 28, with the winner being announced during the U.S. Army All-American Bowl Awards Show on Jan. 5 in San Antonio, Texas.

Thompson-Robinson is the only player from Nevada to be nominated, and one of three quarterbacks. The list also includes Mater Dei wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown, whom the Gaels played on the road Sept. 2.

Thompson-Robinson has helped the Gaels to an 11-2 record this season on 65.7 percent passing and a Southern Nevada-leading 2,756 yards and 31 touchdowns. He also has rushed for 365 yards and five touchdowns.

Thompson-Robinson tweeted Monday “I’m 100000000% (100 million percent) UCLA.” He originally committed to UCLA in April, choosing the Bruins over 25 other scholarship offers. He is expected to sign in February.

Mora was fired Sunday following a 28-23 loss to rival Southern California, which dropped the Bruins to 5-6 overall this season and 3-5 in Pac-12 play.

Bishop Gorman won its ninth consecutive Sunset Region championship with a 42-7 victory over Arbor View last Friday, and will play Liberty in the Class 4A state semifinals at 2 p.m. Friday at Rancho.

The Gaels have won the last eight state championships.
