ALL-STARS: Sullivan helps Sunset seniors rally past Sunrise

Marcus Sullivan scored on a 3-yard run with 34.8 seconds remaining to lift the Sunset Region seniors to a 21-17 win over the Sunrise in the Lions Club High School All-Star Football Game on Saturday night at Las Vegas High.

Sullivan, a Cheyenne running back who signed with UNLV, took a direct snap and plunged into the end zone behind the left side of his offensive line to complete the Sunset’s comeback from a 17-0 first-quarter deficit.

“It wasn’t hard,” Sullivan said of the rally. “We came out at halftime and talked about our mistakes. We came out and played as a team.”

Sullivan was voted the game’s overall Most Valuable Player. He carried 12 times for 92 yards and one touchdown and caught two passes for 38 yards.

Offensive MVP went to Canyon Springs wide receiver DeShaun Stewart, who rushed for 53 yards and one TD on four carries and caught two passes for 33 yards for the Sunrise.

Defensive MVP was awarded to Bishop Gorman defensive back and UNLV signee John Therrell, whose 65-yard interception return for a TD pulled the Sunset to within 17-14 in the third quarter.

The Sunrise jumped to a 17-0 first-quarter lead on a 19-yard scoring strike from Rancho quarterback James Cammack to Rams teammate Dijon Holman, a 32-yard field goal by Las Vegas' Trevor Lowe and a 29-yard TD run by Stewart.

But the Sunset scored 21 unanswered points, including a 5-yard TD run by Gorman quarterback Joe Huber in the second quarter.

Huber completed 8 of 14 passes for 127 yards with one interception.

Centennial receiver Matt Holley hauled in four passes for 63 yards for the Sunset.

Las Vegas running back Reggie Bullock carried three times for 60 yards for the Sunrise.

A ceremony at halftime honored former Cimarron-Memorial coach Greg Spencer, who died of esophageal cancer at age 52 in January.
