2012 Durango Football Capsule

DURANGO

Coach: Matt Gerber, first season

2011 record: 5-5 (5-3 Southwest League)

Returning letterwinners: 14

Returning starters: Four offense, six defense

Base offensive set: Power T

Base defensive set: 5-2

Top offensive players: RB Marcus Sanders-Williams (Sr.); RB Arie McQuaig (Sr.); OL Ben Rush (Sr.); QB Scott Martinez (Sr.)

Top defensive players: LB Arie McQuaig (Sr.); LB Gene Germain (Sr.); DB Anthony Collins (Sr.); DB Kameron Gillis (Jr.)

Outlook: Gerber takes over a team that has made the playoffs for three straight years, and the new coach looks to keep the streak alive.

There is plenty of firepower in the backfield with Sanders-Williams, who has committed to Utah, and McQuaig leading the way.

McQuaig led the team with 902 rushing yards and 12 TDs last season, and Bishop Gorman transfer

Sanders-Williams added 248 yards and four touchdowns after becoming eligible late in the season.

McQuaig and Germain give the Trailblazers a pair of strong linebackers, and Gillis had four interceptions last year and should key the secondary.

Gerber said the development of the offensive and defensive lines will determine how much success the team has this season.
