Las Vegas High’s Jacob Tonda won a 2.8-mile race in 17 minutes, 54 seconds to edge teammate Hector Ortega by one second Wednesday in a four-team cross country meet at Freedom Park.
Tonda and Ortega paced the Wildcats to a first-place finish with 24 points. Eldorado was second with 57, followed by Moapa Valley at 76 and Desert Pines at 85.
Moapa Valley’s Skyler Whipple finished third at 17:58.
Bahati breezes in Chargers’ victory
At Desert Breeze, Basabose Bahati won the 2.4-mile race in 12:15 to lead Clark to 24 points and a victory over Durango (40) and Desert Oasis (48).
Desert Oasis’ Benjamin Mazone was second in 13:44, followed by Clark’s Mucuranyana Amon (14:00), Desert Oasis’ Frankie Martinez (14:41) and Durango’s Sami Mesgun (14:44).
Decaires, Rasmussen pace Grizzlies to win
At Sierra Vista, Denzel Decaires beat teammate Royce Rasmussen to the finish line by one second as both helped Spring Valley win a three-team meet.
The Grizzlies had a team score of 25 points, followed by Pahrump Valley with 33 and Sierra Vista with 73.
Decaires won the 2.5 mile race in 15:54. Rasmussen was second in 15:55, followed by Pahrump’s Andrew White in 16:19.
Cimarron wins five-team meet
At Cheyenne, Cimarron-Memorial placed three runners in the top five to win a five-team meet.
Cheyenne’s Taikye Wright Brown won the 2.6-mile race in 14:32. Cimarron’s Malik Jackson was second in 15:05, one second ahead of Faith Lutheran’s Gavin Williams.
The Spartans had a team score of 33. Faith Lutheran was second with 48, followed by Cheyenne with 69, Indian Springs with 94 and The Meadows with 107.
