BOYS BOWLING: Clark’s Caleb Andrews bounces back to claim 4A title

The day didn’t get off to a good start for Clark’s Caleb Andrews. But it couldn’t have ended better.

Andrews rolled a gutter ball in his first frame, but still came away with the Class 4A individual state bowling title at Gold Coast Bowling Center on Friday.

“I realized that once I threw that gutter at the beginning, I was good from there,” Andrews said.

Andrews posted the top boys series of the day, rolling a 709 series to win by 11 pins over Las Vegas High’s Kyle Wilson.

Andrews said he was able to get that mistake out of the way early and play his game from then on out.

“It was better to happen there then anywhere else,” he said.

Andrews finished out the series with a 256 game to clinch the title. He said he recently has been bowling in the 220s, but his usual average is in the 190s, so the score in the final game was slightly out of the ordinary.

“Going in, I was just expecting to bowl what I’ve been bowling, expecting the usual, and whatever happens happens,” he said.

Chaparral’s Cerell Cardines finished with a 634 series, edging Del Sol’s Skylur Pinkus by eight pins to win the Class 3A state title.

“I pretty much just tried to have fun with myself when I’m out there,” Cardines said. “Because if I get into my head, it’s all going to fall apart from there. So I just tried to talk to people I want to talk to and just bowl. Act like it’s practice.”

Cardines’ worst performance came in his final game of the series with a 187, but he had built up enough of a lead to hold on for a win.

“You just want to keep your mind nice and open,” Cardines said. “I missed some throws, but I still came out with the win.”

Tech’s Kyle Rendon was a strike away from a perfect game, coming up with a spare in the 10th frame to finish at 289. But he didn’t break 200 in the next two games, and finished third at 620.
