Spring Valley guard Essence Booker chooses Nevada

Spring Valley senior guard Essence Booker will play college basketball at Nevada next season, she announced on Twitter on Wednesday.

Her commitment is nonbinding and won’t be official until she signs a national letter of intent. The early signing period begins on Nov. 8.

“(Booker) kind of set the bar for the girls that are in the program,” Grizzlies coach Billy Hemberger said. “For her to be able to accomplish those goals and stuff, it’s just huge.”

Booker averaged 15 points, 6.5 rebounds and 3.8 assists for the Grizzlies last season en route to Southwest League Player of the Year honors.

She was also a second-team all-state pick.

“She should be competing for the Gatorade Player of the Year (this season),” Hemberger said. “I think it’s awesome that she can commit … and just focus on the team. That’s really always been her focus.”
