ROUNDUP: Gorman girls lose, advance anyway

It didn’t go exactly as planned, but Bishop Gorman’s girls moved into the title game of the Tournament of Champions in Phoenix.

The Gaels lost a 72-61 decision to Bishop Carroll (Pa.) on Saturday, but advanced to the title game because Bishop Carroll’s players must return to school for exams on Monday, when the championship game will be held. Gorman will play Mater Dei (Calif.) for the title.

Bishop Carroll made 20 3-pointers in the game.

Aaryn Ellenberg led Gorman with 24 points. Dannielle Diamant added 13 points, and teammate Chelsie Pitt scored 10.

Mater Dei (Calif.) 78, Centennial 46 — At the Tournament of Champions in Phoenix, Kathryn Haugen scored 16 points to help Mater Dei pull away from the Bulldogs.

Alexyz Vailotama added 11 points for Mater Dei.

Deanna Daniels led Centennial with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Alexis Byrd added 16 points for the Bulldogs.

Legacy and Canyon Springs couldn’t keep up in the Class 4A girls basketball state semifinals. The Southern Region representatives in 3A also were eliminated.
