LADY WOLVES TOURNEY: Aggies bounce back from loss to rout Desert Pines

Arbor View girls basketball coach Annette Turley had to wait longer than expected, but her team finally got a tournament win Monday.

Caroline Rivera had 10 points and two steals to help the Aggies take control early en route to a 47-19 losers’ bracket victory over Desert Pines in the Lady Wolves Holiday Tournament at Basic.

“It feels good, but I am still disappointed because we shouldn’t be in the losers’ bracket,” said Turley, whose squad opened the day with a loss to Los Alamitos (Calif.). “We made fewer mistakes in this game. We took care of the ball and avoided turnovers.”

The Aggies rattled off the first eight points and led 11-2 when Janae Strode nailed a four-foot jumper late in the first quarter.

Arbor View, which held the Jaguars to two first-half field goals, led 19-5 at halftime, allowing Turley to unload her bench for much of the second half.

“There are some things we are working on so we can compete at the next level,” Turley said. “So today was a good learning experience that we can build upon.”

The Aggies led 38-7 after holding Desert Pines without a field goal in the third quarter, but Desert Pines’ Chrystian Myles found a rhythm in the fourth, when she scored nine of her 12 points. She also finished with five rebounds and five steals.

Strode added six points for Arbor View, which forced 27 turnovers.

Denver East (Colo.) 62, Legacy 21 — Jonnae Richardson had 18 points and five rebounds to help the Angels roll past the Longhorns in a semifinal.

Legacy 44, Tech 29 — TaEha Pankey scored seven points to lead the Longhorns past the Roadrunners.

Tamya Blackwell added six points to the balanced Legacy attack.

Williams and Clarissa Szluha each scored eight points to lead Tech.
