ROUNDUP: Turner, Winder lift Gaels to Beach Ball Classic title

Alex Turner drained four free throws to key a game-clinching 6-2 run, and Anson Winder hit the go-ahead basket with 15 seconds to play Thursday as Bishop Gorman’s boys basketball team downed Columbia (Ga.) in the championship game of the Beach Ball Classic in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Gorman trailed 50-48 before Turner tied the game with two free throws — his first two points of the game — with 1:23 to play.
Johnathan Loyd drove past three Columbia defenders and dished off to Winder for a layup with 15 seconds left to give the Gaels a 52-50 lead.
Turner upped the margin to four with two more free throws with six seconds left before Columbia scored a harmless basket just before the buzzer.
Loyd scored 11 of his 17 points in the second half to lead the Gaels. Winder had 15 points and seven rebounds, and Taylor Spencer added 11 points.
Gorman (10-1) has won 10 straight since a season-opening loss to Findlay Prep. The Gaels’ last eight wins have come against teams from outside of Nevada, including victories over teams from Virginia, New York and Kentucky in the Beach Ball tournament.
Jershon Cobb scored 20 points for Columbia, which was ranked in the top 25 nationally by USA Today earlier this season.
Sierra Vista 57, Buena (Ariz.) 54 — At Tucson, Ariz., Viko Noma’aea scored 22 of his 31 points in the second half as the Mountain Lions rallied past Buena to win the second-place bracket of the Northwest Desert Classic.
Buena led 28-22 at the half, but Noma’aea scored 14 points during a 17-7 third-quarter run that gave the Mountain Lions a 39-35 lead.
Mountain View (Ariz.) 67, Canyon Springs 61 — At Yuma, Ariz., Mountain View went 23-for-28 from the free-throw line and held off the Pioneers in the Visit Mesa Basketball Challenge.
Michael Thompson led Canyon Springs with 18 points. Jeremy Alexander scored 11 and Curtis Stuckey 10 for the Pioneers.
