MOAPA VALLEY TOURNEY: Big second half lifts Pirates to win

Moapa Valley has been all over the Western United States playing games this season.

The Pirates got one of their best victories of the young season Monday at home, rallying for a 67-46 victory over Lincoln County in the Moapa Valley Holiday Classic.

“We challenged them a lot on defense,” Pirates coach Dallas Larsen said. “In the second half, we really locked down on the (Eric) Rippetoe kid.”

Max Jenkins scored 25 points and Shaun Hilton 11 for Moapa Valley.

Lincoln County led the game early by opening on a 13-5 run led by Rippetoe. The Lynx finished the first half ahead 29-24.

In the third quarter, Larsen made a switch, moving point guard Hilton to the post and having Casen Lewis play point.

The switch worked, as the Pirates went on a 22-6 run to lead 46-35 at the end of the third quarter.

“We wanted to get Shaun down low,” Larsen said. “That was one of our goals.”

Rippetoe had 24 points to lead Lincoln County. Tyler Wadsworth added 15 points for the Lynx.

Moapa Valley 66, The Meadows 51 — Hilton had 13 points, 13 rebounds and six assists to lead the Pirates.

Jenkins had 18 points and Matt Vallet 12 for Moapa Valley.

Max Newman sxored 16 to lead the Mustangs.

Canyon Springs JV 70, Lincoln County 56 — Despite 34 points from Dantley Walker, the Lynx fell to the Pioneers after being outscored 26-4 in the fourth quarter.

West Wendover 61, McCoy (Canada) 49 — Brandon Hoston scored 27 points to lead the Wolverines to the win.

Drew Arrien added 16 for West Wendover, which outscored McCoy 17-3 in the third quarter.

Canyon Springs JV 64, The Meadows 56 — Richard Martinez scored 16 points in a losing effort for The Meadows, which also got 13 from Austin Brown, 11 from Newman and 10 from Gerard Martinez.
