FIELDER’S VOICES: Post-Super Bowl hibernation gave me plenty of time to think

I thought I was depressed after the high school football season ended.

But now that the Super Bowl’s come and gone, the reality of life without football has hit me hard.

I tried to keep the Super Bowl party going, locking myself in my bedroom with a highlight video, a dozen bags of chips and an industrial-sized vat of dip.

Mmmm, dip.

But I ran out of dip Wednesday afternoon and had to come out of hibernation and catch up with some high school sports action.

So here are some random post-Super Bowl thoughts on the prep scene.

— Note to Darwin Rost: You better watch your back.

First Cheyenne gets rid of Charles Anthony after he posted a 43-15 record in five seasons with the Desert Shields.

Then Gorman gives Bob Altshuler the boot after he went 26-2 in two years and won the school’s first state title since 1983.

Granted, Altshuler was kind of wacky. Taking off your shirt and doing a bizarre flexing routine after a game is just plain weird.

But all the guy did was win.

Rost better watch out. His Palo Verde teams were 26-2 the last two years, too. And, after all, the Panthers did lose the state championship game.

— Note to the Durango girls basketball coaching staff: We know Mia Bell is good. Enough already. Did she really need to drop 52 points on Clark in a 96-46 win?

Don’t get me wrong. Bell is a fantastic player, and probably as much fun to watch as any girls player in town. I hope she has a great college career at UNLV.

But what was she doing on the floor in the fourth quarter against Clark? Did she need to score 19 of the team’s final 23 points?

Durango led 73-38 after three quarters. Something tells me someone was counting points and looking for 50.

People were calling for a public flogging after Centennial’s girls soccer team scored 19 goals against Mojave. Is this really any better?

— Note to Sierra Vista’s Ray Tapusoa. If your team is going to do anything in the postseason, you need to keep your emotions in check. Your team needs you on the floor.

Tapusoa fouled out Wednesday against Gorman with more than seven minutes left and his team trailing by two points. He was whistled for a reach-in, then slammed the ball to the court and got a tech for his fifth foul.

Tapusoa showed some class, apologizing to the official prior to leaving the court. But Sierra Vista is clearly a better team with him than without him.

The Mountain Lions did show me something by refusing to fold. They wound up losing by four, but Akeem Smith, Dallin Molina and sophomore Viko Noma’aea came up big and if that trio can keep playing well, Sierra Vista could make some noise in the playoffs.

If Tapusoa is on the court.

— Note to the area’s wrestlers who advanced to next weekend’s state tournament: Have fun in Winnemucca.

Not exactly a glamorous destination for a state tournament, but I hear they have a bowling alley there, so you’ve got that going for you. Which is nice.

Seriously, congratulations for making it to state. I’ve got to admit, I don’t really get wrestling. I couldn’t pull off the uniform, and the only thing I like better than watching sports is junk food, so a sport where you have to watch your weight is completely out of the question.

But you grapplers show some serious dedication, and making it to state is a sweet way to end the season.

Just tell me this. Where do you find 103-pounders? I ate at least that much dip this week.

Mmmm, dip.
