Durango rides fast start to boys basketball win over Valley

Valley High School coach Brian Farnsworth feared his young, banged-up boys basketball team was in for a long night Thursday as it played its third game in as many nights.

His fears were well-founded as his team fell behind Durango 12-0 en route to a 66-48 loss.

“They were fresh, they are very talented, they did what they had to do, and we were a bit sluggish,” Farnsworth said.

The Vikings (2-4) had problems stopping Marcus Falley, who seemingly scored at will. The senior guard sat most of the fourth quarter and finished with 27 points, eight rebounds and five assists for the Trailblazers (3-0).

Falley said he has begun to respond to the challenge of being a senior leader.

“It was a hard role to take on at first, but I feel it getting easier as this season goes on,” Falley said. “Tonight, I felt we played together as a team, and our team chemistry is getting stronger.”

Durango coach Deshawn Henry said he was proud of his team for holding the Vikings to fewer than 50 points.

“Our focus all week was on defense,” Henry said. “I was really pleased with our defensive effort. We’re committed to being a good defensive team.

“Valley is a good team, and it’s a tough year in Vegas hoops as every team has got talent. So, there are no easy nights.”

Senior center Glenn Pulliam added 12 points off the bench for the Trailblazers.

Keenyn Thomas scored 11 points for the Vikings.
