BOYS BASKETBALL: O’Bannon, Gaels win tourney opener

Charles O’Bannon scored 20 of his 29 points in the second half Saturday to lead Bishop Gorman’s boys basketball team to a 72-58 win over Capital Christian (Calif.) in the Maxpreps Holiday Classic in Rancho Mirage, Calif.

O’Bannon hit three 3-pointers in the third quarter as the Gaels expanded their 25-22 halftime lead to 51-38.

Christian Popoola added 19 points, five assists, four steals and four rebounds, and Zach Collins had 10 points, 13 rebounds and seven blocked shots for Gorman.

Isaiah Jones led the Cougars with 16 points.

Boulder City 64, Vista Del Lago (Calif.) 47 — At Menifee, Calif., Justus Greene had 17 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Eagles by the Ravens in the Paloma Valley Winter Shootout.

Zach Murphy added 17 points, and Austin Wishard scored 11 for Boulder City, which led 37-13 at the half.

Coronado 70, Yeshiva University of Los Angeles 48 — At Ventura, Calif., Trey Hurlburt had 14 points as the Cougars downed the Panthers in the Kiwanis Classic.

Jake DesJardins added 12 points and 11 rebounds for Coronado, which used a 19-8 third-quarter burst to pull away.
