Welch, Faucher spark Silverado over Cimarron

Silverado’s baseball team stranded five runners in scoring position in the first three innings and trailed Cimarron-Memorial by a run going to the fourth.

But thanks largely to Hunter Welch and Bryan Faucher, the Skyhawks would have little to worry about Monday.

Welch held the Spartans to six hits in a complete game, Faucher hit his eighth home run of the season, and Silverado rolled to a 9-2 road win over Cimarron.

“We left a lot of guys on base early, but we got some timely hits the second half of the game, and we pitched real well,” coach Brian Whitaker said. “Hunter’s had a couple really good outings for us, and he did a great job. So overall, we’re pleased coming off the spring break and jumping into a tough game like this.”

Welch, a junior right-hander, allowed two earned runs on six hits, with two walks and six strikeouts.

“My changeup was working pretty well, and I knew I had a good defense behind me, so they were going to take care of it,” Welch said.

Faucher was 3-for-5 with three RBIs to power a 14-hit attack for Silverado (13-7-1). The senior designated hitter belted a two-run homer over the left-field fence in the top of the seventh inning for the final margin.

“Bryan has done a real good job for us, both at the plate and on the mound,” Whitaker said. “The guy’s got a lot of power, and he’s getting more selective.

“He’s shortened some things up and has really worked on making good contact. The ball comes off his bat really well.”

Faucher hit a go-ahead RBI groundout in the fourth, when the Skyhawks scored four times to take a 5-2 lead.

Cimarron (14-4) loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the second, but Welch escaped unscathed by getting Josh Nuernberg to pop out. The Spartans scored twice in the third, but Welch retired 11 of the next 13 batters he faced.

“(Welch) had some good command,” Whitaker said. “He was throwing a lot of strikes, locating the ball real well and changing speeds. The guy can pitch.”

Marty Sifuentes (two RBIs) and David Kuzma (one) went 3-for-4 for Silverado. Mark Janosik was 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Nick Borowski had two hits and scored a run for Cimarron.
