Small schools: Pahrump Valley rallies to beat Virgin Valley

Updated May 14, 2018 - 10:25 pm

Pahrump Valley exploded in its last two turns at bat to turn a 7-0 fifth inning deficit into a come-from-behind 9-7 victory over Virgin Valley in the Class 3A Southern Region tournament on Friday.

The win moved the Trojans (20-11-1) into the final against Boulder City (19-14-1) at noon Saturday. Pahrump would have to win twice to claim the title.

The Trojans scored six runs in the bottom of the fifth on just two hits. It started a leadoff single by Chase McDaniel.

A walk and an error allowed the first run to score followed by back-to-back bases loaded walks. A balk plated another urn before Joey Koenig’s two-run double.

In the sixth, Pahrump loaded the bases with no outs. Another error on a possible force play plated the tying run, followed by two sacrifices for the final margin.

The Bulldogs did load the bases in the top of the seventh after two quick outs, but were retired on a foul out with the tying run at second.

“We just told them to battle,” Pahrump coach Brian Hayes said. “Our motto’s been ‘Just focus on the next pitch.’ We were complaining about the umpiring in the dugout and we told them they were thinking about the last pitch, not the next pitch.”

Hayes said he saw the Bulldogs running low on pitchers, which he knew gave his team a chance in the later innings.

“When we scored the first four in that sixth and we knew they were low on pitching, that’s when the kids started to smell blood,” he said.

Virgin Valley finished 19-10-1.
