Looking ahead at the week in high school sports

Here is a look at some of the week’s top high school sports events.

Monday — Centennial at Spring Valley, 3:30 p.m.

Two of the area’s top teams meet in a nonleague game. The fifth-ranked Bulldogs and No. 4 Spring Valley play again on Thursday at Centennial.

Tuesday — Basic at Silverado, 3:30 p.m.

The third-ranked Wolves are looking to avenge an 11-5 loss to Silverado on March 27. The Skyhawks hope for another big day from shortstop Dax Fellows who drove in four runs in the first meeting.

Thursday — Arbor View at Cimarron-Memorial, 3:30 p.m.

The Aggies and Spartans are jockeying for position in the Northwest League’s playoff race. This will be the final game of the three-game Northwest League series, and No. 10 Cimarron currently has a narrow edge for third place.

Friday — Basic at Rancho, 3:30 p.m.

Another key Sunrise League matchup for the Wolves. Basic and the seventh-ranked Rams are battling for second place in the league.

Boys Golf

Thursday — Coronado vs. Palo Verde at TPC Las Vegas, 3 p.m.

Two of the favorites for the Class 4A state title go head-to-head in a nine-hole match. The Panthers won by 10 shots when the teams met in an 18-hole match at Anthem Country Club on March 23.

Tuesday — Moapa Valley at Boulder City, 3:30 p.m.

The Eagles are running away with the 3A Sunrise League and this appears to be the final obstacle on the way to an unbeaten league record. Boulder City beat the Pirates 16-0 in five innings when the teams met April 4.

Wednesday — Foothill at Liberty, 3:30 p.m.

The Falcons have surged up the 4A Sunrise League standings the past two weeks. A road win over the Patriots would put Foothill in position to fight for the No. 4 seed during the final week of the season.

Friday — Desert Oasis at Durango, 3:30 p.m.

The finale of a three-game series between two of the Southwest League’s top teams. The Diamondbacks enter the week in third place, two games behind unbeaten Durango.

Boys Swimming

Saturday — Centennial vs. Bishop Gorman at Pavilion, 8 a.m.

Bishop Gorman’s Patrick Streyle and Centennial’s Tyler Peterson both have multiple wins in both the 500-yard freestyle and 100 backstroke this season and could be matched up against each other in this one.

Girls swimming

Saturday — Arbor View vs. Desert Oasis at Pavilion, 8 a.m.

The Aggies and the Diamondbacks have won easily in recent meets but will have a harder time picking up a win when they are matched up this week.

Track and Field

Friday — Sunset FAST Classic at Centennial, 3 p.m.

The Bulldogs host the Sunset Region’s annual freshman-sophomore meet.

Saturday — Sunrise FAST Classic at Green Valley, 9 a.m.

The top freshman and sophomores in the Sunrise Region will meet Saturday at Green Valley.

Boys Volleyball

Monday — Palo Verde at Arbor View, 6 p.m.

These Northwest League teams opened the season as the favorites to win the Sunset Region. The Panthers have stumbled out of the gates, while Arbor View is currently tied for first place in the Northwest.

Tuesday — Sierra Vista at Desert Oasis, 6 p.m.

The winner probably will finish as the third seed in the Southwest League. The Mountain Lions swept Desert Oasis at home on March 29. Can the Diamondbacks return the favor on their home court?

Tuesday — Mojave at Cheyenne, 6 p.m.

If Mojave is going to lose a league game this season, it will come here. The Rattlers have won 40 straight league matches dating back to 2012. Cheyenne currently is in second place in the Class 3A Southern League. The Desert Shields’ only league loss came in three sets to Mojave on March 29.

Wednesday — Arbor View at Centennial, 6 p.m.

Centennial, which is seeking its first league title since 2013, will look to give the Aggies another Northwest League loss and set up a photo finish in the toughest league in Southern Nevada.

Thursday — Bishop Gorman at Durango, 6 p.m.

A Southwest League title could be at stake here. Gorman swept the Trailblazers on March 31. Will home-court advantage be enough for Durango this time around?
