DIVISION I-A BASEBALL: Boulder City rallies late to stun Churchill County

Jake Hubel’s three-run double highlighted a seven-run sixth inning, and Boulder City’s baseball team rallied for a 13-9 victory over Churchill County in the opening round of the Division I-A state tournament Thursday at Galena High in Reno.

The Eagles (26-7) meet Elko (23-12-1) in the winners’ bracket final at 1 p.m. Friday at Galena.

Boulder City trailed 9-6 entering the bottom of the sixth and loaded the bases with no outs after Nolan Desantis walked and Austin Wishard and Peyton Koopman singled.

Preston Van Diest followed with a two-run single to bring the Eagles within one run before Hubel’s bases-clearing hit three batters later put the Eagles on top 11-9. Zach Murphy and Michael Morelli each tacked on RBI singles later in the sixth for Boulder City.

Hubel, who also had a two-run single in the fifth, went 2-for-4 with five RBIs.

Desantis finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI, Koopman was 3-for-5 with two runs, and Kodey Rahr went 3-for-3 with two doubles, two runs and an RBI as the Eagles banged out 17 hits against four Churchill County pitchers.

Van Diest and Alec Mathis each drove in two runs for Boulder City.

Cameron Beyer was 3-for-3 with two RBIs, and Jack Swisher went 2-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI for the defending state champion Greenwave (22-12).

Elko 2, Sierra Vista 0 — Jhared Gonzalez threw six strong innings in the Mountain Lions’ loss to the Indians at Galena.

Gonzalez allowed one earned run and struck out five while allowing eight hits and one walk. Sierra Vista (19-19) takes on Churchill County in an elimination game at 10 a.m. at Galena.

Brenden Yocum went the distance for Elko, scattering five singles. Benton Wickersham and Nick Smiley had run-scoring singles in the first inning to account for all the runs.
