Bulldogs wake up with win over Mountain View

The Virgin Valley baseball team desperately needed a wake-up call Friday afternoon after being shutout 10-0 against Pahrump Valley earlier in the day.

“We just didn’t get off the bus this morning,” said coach Brian Fanning, whose squad won only one game last season. “ We’ve been trying to yell and scream at them to get them to listen and wake up.”

In the third inning against Mountain View, the Bulldogs came alive.

Cody Faught’s three hits, three runs and two stolen bases, helped Virgin Valley silence the Saints 10-7 in a four-inning game in the Spring Slam at Mountain View.

The Bulldogs scored four runs in the first inning and two runs in the second, but trailed 7-6 heading into the third. With both starting pitchers struggling with command, Virgin Valley seized every opportunity in the bottom half of the inning. 

The Bulldogs (3-5) used three consecutive singles with one out to ignite a four-run rally, capitalizing on three walks, a balk call that brought a run home, and a sacrifice fly from DeVonte Milligan that scored Tanner Hansen.

“It was huge, especially for the lower end of our batting order,” Faught said. “They really stepped up and made things happen.”

Faught finished 3-for-3 with a triple for Virgin Valley, and teammate Ricky Trujillo went 2-for-2 with an RBI, a walk and three runs scored.

“It’s been a long week,” Fanning said. “This is our fifth game this week, so we were a little worried about that. It was good to see the bats come alive. It was good to see people get a little more selective at the plate. We had kids earlier in the week swinging at stuff three feet over their head and 10 feet in front of the plate.”

Ian Locke went 2-for-2 with two RBIs for Mountain View.
