DIVISION III BOYS: Gray, Saints earn state tournament berth

Tevin Gray scored 18 of his 27 points in the second half on Friday and was 12-for-13 from the free-throw line, as Mountain View downed Agassi Prep, 65-59 in a Division III Southern League semifinal at Chaparral.

Mountain View (20-7) will meet The Meadows (24-3) in the league final at 2:40 p.m. Saturday at Desert Pines. Both teams advance to next week's state tournament in Reno.

Agassi Prep led 49-48 with just more than four minutes left. But back-to-back three pointers from Terrence Brooks and Gray, who had 10 rebounds, gave Mountain View the lead for good.

"It's a great feeling knowing your team kept its composure down the stretch," Mountain View coach Ray LeBoeuf said. "This is a very resilient group, and I'm very proud of them. To beat a quality program like Agassi three times in one season is a huge accomplishment."

Twice, the Saints held eight-point leads but saw the Stars rally.

But in the end, Gray was just too much.

"We kept our heads, especially in the final four minutes," said Gray. "We didn't worry about what they were doing, just concentrated on what we needed to do."

Mountain View (20-7) made 5 of 7 foul shots in the final 37 seconds to preserve the win.

Terrence Brooks added 14 points for Mountain View, and Tyrell Brooks scored 10.

The Saints helped their cause by hitting eight 3-pointers, four of them during a 26-point fourth quarter.

"We wanted to take the game to them," LeBoeuf said. "We knew they were going to be aggressive but we wanted to push the tempo, also. Having this type of success is a testament to the kids."

Daniel Plummer led Agassi Prep (16-6) with 25 points, and teammate Akeemis Williams scored 10.

The Meadows 54, Calvary Chapel 34 — Ethan Fridman led four double-figure scorers with 20 points as the Mustangs downed the Lions.

Asheesh Chopra and Jake Epstein each added 11 points, and Max Hisatake scored 10 for The Meadows.

Quentin Hank had 16 points for the Lions (16-12).
