RECRUITING: Two local football players commit to Mountain West

Two local prep football players made oral commitments Sunday, as Centennial wide receiver Savon Scarver selected Utah State and Bishop Gorman athlete Austin Arnold chose UNR.

The commitments are nonbinding, and the first day Scarver and Arnold can sign a letter of intent is Feb. 1. Utah State’s and UNR’s coaches cannot comment until that time.

Scarver, who made an official visit to Utah State this weekend, is the second player from Centennial to commit to the Aggies for the class of 2017 joining Jamaal Evans.

The 6-foot, 175-pound Scarver was a second-team all-state selection as a senior when he caught 43 passes for 946 yards and eight touchdowns to go along with two rushing TDs and a return score. He made the All-Northwest League first team at wide receiver.

Scarver, a native of Columbus, Ohio, also is a standout track performer. He was named the Review-Journal’s Boys Athlete of the Year for track and field as a junior after he set the Division I state-meet record in the 300-meter hurdles (37.83 seconds) and placed second in two other individual events.

Scarver had eight known scholarship offers and chose the Aggies over a handful of other Mountain West schools, including UNLV.

Arnold was a first-team All-Southwest League pick as an athlete as a senior and finished as Gorman’s fourth-leading receiver with 18 catches for 299 yards and eight touchdowns. Arnold also had six tackles, an interception and a sack on defense.

UNR was the lone known scholarship offer for the 5-11, 190-pound Arnold.
