NIAA overturns volleyball forfeit

Arbor View and Cheyenne’s volleyball records changed Tuesday despite the fact that neither team played.

The Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association overruled match officials who awarded Friday’s contest between the teams to Cheyenne as the result of a forfeit. Instead of a forfeit, the match has been ruled suspended.

Arbor View was leading the Desert Shields, 25-15, 14-9 in a home match when officials halted the match due to crowd control issues.

Match officials asked an Arbor View administrator to help with crowd control, but weren’t satisfied with the response and called the match off.

“The offical has the authority to rule a forfeit,” said NIAA assistant director Donnie Nelson. “There was a group of people misbehaving and officials felt there were security concerns.

“In this case, we’ve decided to side with the National Federation rule book.”

Nelson said no make-up date has been set, and it’s possible the match will only be finished if it affects possible playoff seeding.

Arbor View is in sixth place in the Northwest League. Cheyenne is in seventh. The top four teams qualify for the postseason.
