CENTENNIAL TOURNEY: Palo Verde girls edge Carson in double overtime

It’s no secret that Hayley Henderson is the key to success for Palo Verde’s girls basketball team.

Carson High succeeded in containing her in the second half on Saturday, but Henderson took over in overtime to lead the Panthers to a 57-52 double-overtime victory in the Las Vegas Holiday Classic at Centennial.

Henderson, who led all scorers, posted eight of her 27 points in the extra periods.

“Everything goes through Hayley,” Palo Verde coach Phil Clarke said. “She is our vocal leader, and she leads by example.”

Henderson set the tone for her teammates in the first half, scoring 15 points to give the Panthers a 29-24 halftime lead.

But the Senators battled back to tie it at 48 late in the fourth quarter, and shots by Henderson and teammate Shameka Smith failed to fall in the final 10 seconds of regulation.

Carson took a 51-49 lead late in the first overtime, but Henderson took an inbounds pass and hurried the ball up the floor before nailing an 8-footer to send the game into a second overtime period.

“(Carson) pressed us, which let us get a running start,” Clarke said. “Hayley caught it on the run and got it in the lane to make the big shot.”

Henderson, who scored eight of Palo Verde’s nine overtime points, hit her fourth 3-pointer of the night early in the second overtime, and the Panthers closed on a 6-1 scoring run to seal the win.
