RECRUITING: Gorman LB Palelei de-commits from Stanford

Bishop Gorman senior linebacker Evan Palelei said Sunday he has de-committed from Stanford, choosing to explore other options after originally giving an oral commitment to the Cardinal on April 11.

Palelei said he de-committed Sept. 2 because he had fallen out of touch with Stanford.

"It was really just we lost contact with them over the summer," Palelei said. "I just felt like I should open up my options again."

Palelei said he has a scholarship offer from Colorado and believes one still stands from UNLV. He is working on scheduling official visits and plans to begin taking trips by next month.

The 6-foot-2-inch, 222-pound Palelei, who also plays offensive guard at Gorman, was ranked a three-star prospect and the No. 72 outside linebacker prospect in the nation by Rivals.com as of Sunday. The Gaels (3-0, 2-0 Southwest League) have pitched two straight shutouts and outscored opponents 129-14 on the season.

"It definitely helps," Palelei said of Gorman's success attracting scouts.

Palelei is the son of former UNLV offensive lineman Lonnie Palelei, who played for four NFL teams between 1993 and 1999.
