NOTES: Son of rapper Snoop Lion to play wide receiver for Gorman

Tony Sanchez has crossed paths with the offspring of several celebrities during his career as a prep football coach.

Sanchez coached against Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Montana’s son during his time in the Bay Area. And he has had multiple players from famous families during his five seasons at Bishop Gorman, including this past season’s quarterback, Randall Cunningham II.

“It’s really not that big of a deal,” Sanchez said. “They’re all just people trying to better themselves.”

Perhaps that’s why Sanchez expects it to be business as usual for the Gaels this fall when Cordell Broadus takes the field.

Broadus, the son of rapper Snoop Dogg (aka Snoop Lion), ended weeks of speculation about his future last week when he enrolled at Gorman. Broadus is regarded as one of the top wide receivers in the class of 2015.

“In the short time I’ve been around him, he’s a hard worker and a nice kid,” Sanchez said. “We’ll show up with the same plan and work with him like any other kid.

“Obviously our school has had a lot of successful people come through. Every single one of our kids is a big deal, regardless of how famous their families are.”

The 6-foot-3-inch, 186-pound Broadus caught 60 passes for 685 yards and eight touchdowns as a junior at Diamond Bar (Calif.), about 30 miles east of Los Angeles. He was one of 19 Diamond Bar players suspended for one game following a bench-clearing brawl in October and shot down rumors after the season that he was set to transfer to Gorman.

Broadus, who was not available for comment, officially left Diamond Bar on Dec. 20.

“He told me that he wants to play for a bigger school to get him ready for college,” Diamond Bar coach Ryan Maine told the San Gabriel (Calif.) Valley Tribune. “We’re going to miss his presence at wide receiver. We wish him the best of luck.”

Broadus, a four-star recruit by multiple recruiting services, is ranked the No. 6 wide receiver in the class of 2015 by ESPN.com, No. 7 by Scout.com and No. 18 by Rivals.com. He has received more than a dozen scholarship offers, including one late last week from Florida State.

With Broadus and 6-4 tight end Alize Jones, a UCLA commit, Gorman is expected to have a potent red-zone receiving duo as it looks for its sixth straight large-school state title.

“To be honest, I’ve watched him lift weights, and that’s it. We’ll find out when the appropriate time comes during spring football,” Sanchez said. “He’ll jump into the fold and get working. We have a lot of other kids working out and working hard. He’s part of the group.”

■ SAWYERS STEPS DOWN — Virgin Valley football coach Chris Sawyers said Monday he will resign after two seasons with the Bulldogs.

Sawyers compiled a 13-8 record, including 8-3 last season when he guided Virgin Valley to its first postseason victory since 2008 and a berth in the Division I-A state quarterfinals. Sawyers said his wife is expecting the couple’s first child, and they plan to move to Las Vegas to be closer to family.

“Our support system is in Las Vegas,” Sawyers said. “It’s just not feasible to drive to Mesquite every day.”

Sawyers said he will pursue a coaching job in the Las Vegas area.
