Patriots eliminated from Legion region tourney

Fairfield, Calif., scored four runs in the top of the fourth to break a 2-2 tie and held on for a 6-4 win over Liberty in the American Legion Western Regional on Monday in Fairfield.

The Patriots brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth, but Michael Vargas hit a fly ball to center to end the game and Liberty’s season.

Fairfield scored four runs on five hits in the fourth, but Liberty consistently danced around bigger trouble. Fairfield had 16 hits, two walks and three hit batters in the game, but left 14 on base.

Jay Martz was 2-for-5 with a triple and two RBIs, and Preston Pavilca went 2-for-5 with a double and two runs for the Patriots (29-10), who were eliminated from the tournament.
