I-A SOFTBALL: Eagles, Grizzlies advance to title game

Michaela Hood pitched three innings of relief and went 3-for-4 with three doubles, two runs scored and three RBIs to help Spring Valley’s softball team to a 13-3, six-inning win over Boulder City in the winners’ bracket final of the Division I-A state tournament Friday at Shadow Mountain in Sparks.

Spring Valley (27-3) will meet Boulder City (31-10) in the state final at 9 a.m. Saturday at UNR’s Hixson Park. Boulder City has to beat the Grizzlies twice to take the title.

Hood’s fourth-inning double scored Teegan Teal and Mariah Ward and gave the Grizzlies their first lead at 5-3. Boulder City led 3-2 going into the fourth.

The Eagles finished with nine errors.

In the fifth inning, Spring Valley added five runs to put the game out of reach.

Teal was 4-for-5 with two runs, and Stephanie Huff went 1-for-4 with a double and two RBIs for the Grizzlies, who got a triple, two runs and an RBI from Madison Macove.

Raven Bierlein started the game and threw three innings for Spring Valley.

Bailey Bennett-Jordan, who started and went four innings for Boulder City, was hit with the loss.

Lily Osman went 2-for-4 for Boulder City. Kylee Hamel doubled, and Bryanna Lopez and Marleena Mills each had an RBI for the Eagles.

Boulder City 6, Churchill County 5 — Marleena Mills scored the winning run on an error with two outs in the top of the seventh inning as the Eagles rallied to edge the Greenwave in the losers’ bracket final.

Boulder City trailed 5-4 entering the seventh but got consecutive singles from Micayla Gegen and Jeanne Carmell to start the inning. After Gegen was forced at third, Mills was hit by a pitch to load the bases.

Charlene Masterson also was hit by a pitch, plating Carmell with the tying run.

Osman grounded into a fielder’s choice with the Greenwave getting Jordan Moorhead out at home, but a wild throw trying to complete the double play allowed Mills to score.

Mills was 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs, and Jerra Hinson went 2-for-4 with a homer and two RBIs for Boulder City.

Masterson threw a complete game, striking out five and walking one, to get the win for the Eagles.
